Liturgical Ministry

Altar servers, lectors, lay Eucharistic ministers, choir…

Liturgy comes from the Greek word leitourgia meaning “the work of the people” and it is quite literally the work of our parish community that make worship at St. Mary Parish so meaningful. Liturgical ministry is an excellent opportunity to fulfill your baptismal call of service to one another. Our liturgies should utilize the talents and gifts that God has given this community to the fullest extent. Whether participation is through “behind the scenes” preparation and planning, or through a public role of service within the Mass, parishioner contributions help our liturgies to be truly life-giving celebrations. We have a long-standing tradition of lay participation in our worship. Please prayerfully consider joining one of these ministries.

These ministers serve at Mass every weekend

Lay Eucharistic Ministers

Our Lay Eucharistic Ministers offer the Body and Blood to the assembled Body of Christ who are here to worship. Formation and training are held quarterly. This treasured ministry touches the hearts and souls of the ministers and those to whom they minister. Some of our ministers also bring communion to the homebound.

Lectors

Our Lay Lectors proclaim the Word of God in scripture for our five Masses. Formation and training are held quarterly. Some of our ministers have backgrounds in theatre, speech, marketing and some simply have a love of the Mass and service to it.

Altar servers

Our altar servers begin their service in the fifth grade and have celebrated first communion. Two-day training is offered twice a year. The reverence and skill of these ministers greatly adds to the smooth, prayerful operation of the Mass.

Choir

Our choirs lead the Main Choir—the assembly—in sung prayer. Most choirs rehearse weekly. They range from trained and talented professional musicians to people who just love to sing. All are welcome to share the voices God gave us.

All are welcome to sign up and be a member of the Liturgy Ministry. To sign up a liturgical minister, or to receive more information, please contact Rose Barry at (408) 847-5151 or rose.barry@dsj.org
